The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI)

All drivers in Ireland are legally obligated to carry third party insurance. This means that if a driver causes injury to another party; such as

  • other driver/’s,
  • other driver/’s passengers,
  • cyclists,
  • pedestrians and
  • even the driver’s own passengers,

the driver’s insurance may be responsible for paying for those injuries. If you are injured by a driver who;

  • does not carry third party insurance or
  • who cannot be located after the accident,

you may be able to claim compensation from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI).
The MIBI is responsible for;

  • providing assistance to trace drivers who leave the scene of accidents,
  • compensating victims of accidents caused by motorists who do not have valid insurance cover
  • acting as an intermediary for victims of accidents where the liable driver is insured abroad and
  • Compensation for victims where a hit and run driver cannot be traced.

If you have been involved in an accident which was caused by an un-insured driver or where the driver has left the scene of the accident and the vehicle was un-identified, it is important that you act promptly and comply with the requirements of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland in order to benefit from their scheme.
